Homoeopathy, discovered in 1790 by the German physician Dr. Christian Fredrich Samuel Hahnemann, is a scientific system of medicine that has effectively treated various illnesses for over 200 years. It is based on natural laws and philosophy and is known for its safe and unique healing methods. Over time, homoeopathy has evolved and incorporated modern techniques to heal patients holistically.
Dr. Samuel Hahnemann
(1755 - 1843)
Similimum - Like cures like: (Similia Similibus Curentur)
This is the first and fundamental principle of homoeopathy, which means what can cause can cure. For example, if a healthy person is stung by a bee, he will develop severe stitching and stinging pain with severe inflammatory reaction and burning, puffy red swelling with a lot of pain and irritations due to the toxic effect of that bee sting. According to this first principle of homoeopathy, it is proved that any sick person who develops a symptom picture of the above irrespective of the name of the disease shall be treated and healed by the same bee sting toxin (Apis mellifica - the remedy prepared from the bee).
This curative principle is a natural law that has also been in the culture of humanity where in the Tamil language we have a proverb called "mullai mullaaldhaan Eaduka vendum" (முள்ளை முள்ளால் தான் எடுக்க வேண்டும்) which means, a thorn can only be removed with another thorn (literally) or Fight fire with fire are some explanations.
The same principle is applied in homoeopathic practice as a basic. The remedies used in homoeopathy are tested on human volunteers who are called drug provers from whom the symptoms of the particular drugs are elicited and recorded accordingly. This set of records is termed as 'Materia Medica' in Homoeopathy. The symptoms of the patients are matched with the symptoms in materia medica and a single remedy whose symptoms match the most is chosen and given to the patient.
Singulinum - Single remedy
One of the fundamental healing principles of homeopathy is the use of a single remedy that matches the entire symptom picture of the patient. This sets homeopathy apart from other medical systems that often use multiple medicines, potentially leading to adverse effects.
For instance, if a patient presents with diabetes, hypertension, and gastric ulcer, a homeopath will prescribe one single remedy that matches the entire symptomatology of that particular patient. This approach is in line with the principles of homeopathy, which discourage the use of multiple drugs or combinations such as tonics and syrups for a patient.
Furthermore, prescribing multiple medicines for each disease is not advisable according to homeopathic principles. Instead, homeopathy emphasizes holistic healing with the use of a single and simple medicine according to the individual's symptomatology. By adhering to this principle, homeopathy aims to address the patient's overall well-being rather than treating individual symptoms in isolation.
Minimum - Law of minimum dose
It's really important to give out medicines in really small doses, you know? Homeopathy always aims to make you better safely and quickly by following certain healing rules. That's why it's super safe and hardly ever has any side effects from the medicines. The amount of medicine you get is gonna be tiny. When you take just a little medicine, it's supposed to work even better, at least according to homeopathic principles. So, it's not a good idea to take or prescribe lots of meds, even if they're called homeopathic. If you want more info, check out "Know about your medicines".
Potentisation / Drug Dynamisation
Homoeopathy utilizes a unique process known as potentization to prepare medicines. During this process, the crude drug substances undergo a series of dilutions in successions, where they are repeatedly diluted and succussed (jerked/shaken) in a fixed ratio. This method aims to make the drug substances more powerful and harmless. Despite being postulated by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann 200 years ago, modern science still struggles to fully comprehend how highly diluted substances can effectively impact the human body with various diseases.
However, recent advancements in nanoscience technology have provided some insight into the working principle of homoeopathic medicines. These developments are shedding light on the mechanisms through which these highly diluted homoeopathic medicine substances may exert their effects on the human body.
